Gluten Free Cookie Review

Gluten free deserts keep getting better and better. And as far as cookies go…well there is almost no room for improvement, they taste as good as cookies made with wheat flour. I recently received free samples of 4 gluten free cookies and could not wait to review them.

Lucy’s Gluten Free Cookies

http://www.drlucys.com/cookies/maplebliss

Lucy is an M.D. and mother of a child with severe allergies. Taking matters into her own hands, she started her own line of cookies…… and I am so glad she did. Her cookies are gluten, peanut, milk, nuts and egg free and kosher.  Their gluten free flour blend contains gluten free-oats, garbanzo, potato starch, tapioca, sorghum and fava flours.  Each cookie is about 40 calories and a package contains 15 cookies. I absolutely LOVE these cookies. I tried the maple bliss, ginger snap and chocolate. The ginger snap cookies were intense with ginger flavor and had little bits of spicy chewy ginger in them, the chocolate were dense with chocolate flavor but the maple bliss are my favorites. They remind me of pancakes with butter and maple syrup. Yum!! If you like gingersnap cookies I am confident these will become your new favorites. These cookies are very crisp which I prefer over a soft cookie. I made a dessert concoction which consisted of the cookies ground up in a food processor and layered on the bottom of a glass. On top of that I put a layer of Greek honey yogurt, then a layer of fruit, then another layer of cookies, yogurt and then more fruit. This is my new favorite dessert. A big thumbs up for these cookies. Good job Lucy!

Enjoy Life Gluten Free Cookies

I received a free sample of their  Crunchy Double Chocolate, Sugar Crisp and Vanilla Honey Graham. These cookies are a little thinner than Lucy’s cookies but they are just as crispy, crunchy and delicious.  2 cookies contain 110 calories. I especially love the double chocolate cookies because they contain chocolate chips.  They are free of wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, and soy. Their flour mix contains white Rice Flour, buckwheat Flour, and millet Flour. They also get a big thumbs up.

Hail Merry Macaroons

http://www.hailmerry.com/

Those of you who read my blog know that I am a big fan of coconut. So when the nice folks at Hail Merry sent me a sample of their coconut macaroons I was really excited to try them. Their products are mostly raw, vegan and gluten free. The macaroons contain organic raw coconut oil which is rich in medium chain fatty acids. Fatty acids are important sources of fuel because when your body metabolizes them they yield large quantities of ATP or energy.  So these macaroons are a snack that really is good for you.  I tried the chocolate flavor. They are not overwhelmingly sweet so you really taste the coconut. The texture is very soft and each macaroons is good for about 2 bites. After the first two I felt like I could easily slide into addiction territory as they sort of melt in your mouth. And I felt good about eating them because of the healthy ingredients. Each macaroon is about 65 calories and only about 3 net carbs which is great for those of us on a low carb diet. They are delicious and I give them 2 thumbs up.

Julian Bakery Zero Cookies  http://www.julianbakery.com/low-carb-foods-product/zero-cookies-cocoa-delight-10-cookies/

Julian Bakery sent me a free sample of their Zero cookies (cocoa delight, strawberry banana and ginger).  What sets these cookies apart is the fact that they contain zero net carbs and are gluten free. I have eaten low carb foods and many gluten free foods and I know how difficult it is to combine the two and to my knowledge these are the ONLY gluten free/low carb cookies on the market which is why I really…REALLY wanted to like these cookies. 1 cookie contains 60 calories and 10 total carbs but with 6 grams of fiber and 4 grams of erythritol (as a sweetener) the net grams of carbs comes out to 0 carbs.  They do contain dairy. These cookies are soft and chewy. I happen to prefer a crunchy cookie but if you like soft and chewy you will like these. I found them a little strange at first because they are not very sweet. The sweetness hits you as an aftertaste. They do contain a little stevia and I wish they had added a little more because if they were sweeter I would be a big fan. They are definitely growing on me and if you are looking for a gluten free/low carb cookie you might want to give these a try. But if you have a real sweet tooth, as I do, you might not find them sweet enough.
